NEW MEDIA MANAGER AT NZRL
Friday, 20 January 2012
NZRL are pleased to announce the appointment of Caley Wilson as
the New Zealand Rugby League Media Manager. His appointment
comes as the game is enjoying a rise in profile and playing
numbers, which the NZRL are keen to capitalise on. This role will
see Caley (37) working throughout the year, in addition to handling
the traditional NZRL media manager duties around Test matches.
Caley has worked with the media while in international
thoroughbred marketing roles in Auckland and London, as well as on
some of the UK and Australia's largest sporting events. He
has also managed entertainment events for Dave Dobbyn, Tiki Taane,
Don McGlashan, Greg Johnson and others.
But there has been plenty of rugby league in his world too.
Raised in Pukekohe, in South Auckland, Caley was a regular at
Carlaw Park as a kid. His father, Gary, who played for Ellerslie,
toured as a journalist with the Kiwis to Britain, France and
Australia in the 1970s. After a number of years in rugby
union, Caley played rugby league for the Manurewa Marlins, before a
fourth shoulder reconstruction suggested he might be better placed
doing other things. He has a marketing degree from Otago
University and a post-grad diploma in physical education.
Jim Doyle, the NZRL Chief Executive, thinks now is a critical
time for rugby league to develop its relationship with the media.
"We've seen big growth in numbers playing the game, major
developments in our community activities and domestic competitions,
and some top results over the last few years from our Kiwi and
Junior Kiwi teams. But we need to cement those gains through
continued improvement and by spreading the good word of rugby
league through established and fresh channels. We think this
appointment will help us do just that."
Caley will be contactable on +64 21 804 004 or at caley@nzrl.co.nz from Tuesday,
24 January 2012.
